exclusive challenges created and judged by our resident pros

Resident Pro

Kevin Parry is a stop-motion animator and visual effects artist from Toronto, Canada. After spending a handful of years animating on feature films (Kubo and the Two Strings, Missing Link, The Boxtrolls) he recently made the leap to full-time, social media content creator.

Online, Kevin splits his time between creating mind-bending optical illusions, oddly satisfying stop-motion, and highly shareable advertisements for brands.

Animation can be tough, and people often think it requires specialized equipment and software. But guess what? It can be crazy easy for novices and pros alike. We're going to prove it with the #StopMotionChallenge.

Here's your task: stop-motion animate a PERSON.

Why? Because animating a person is a great reminder that we can create a performance, one frame at a time, using something as basic as a smartphone. Pose, take a picture. Pose, take a picture. Pose, take a pic...

Keep in mind—a person can be many things. They can zoom around on the ground like a skateboard or fly through the air like a plane (by jumping every frame). The possibilities are endless and it's up to you whether or not to tell a story. The main goal is to push past mental blocks about needing high-tech gear, return to the basics, and play. If you hit a wall and get caught up with perfection, remember what Henry Selick (director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peace, and Coraline) said, "You know, I love stop-motion. I've done almost all the styles of animation: I was a 2D animator. I've done cutout animation. I did a CG short a few years ago, 'Moongirl,' for young kids. Stop-motion is what I keep coming back to, because it has a primal nature. It can never be perfect."

Have fun and good luck, we'll see you on the other side!

  • 30% Creativity - You're animating a person, but that doesn't mean they need to move like a person. With animation, motion can turn any object into something extraordinary.
  • 30% Animation Technique - With stop-motion, you need to be hyper-focused on the smallest details - keep track of where everything is moving. Also think about the dynamics of your animation. Play around with a mixture of small and large movements.
  • 30% Concept - How are you using the limitation of animating a person to tell a story or communicate an idea?
  • 10% Extra Flare - Wow factor! It's great to keep it simple, but don't limit yourself. You might add props or use your environment in unexpected ways.
