Like being sucked into a dream, Matty Brown's filmmaking is a tornado of color, inspiration, emotion, and empathy. Nominated in 2013 for “The Piano” and named a 2016 Webby Awards honoree for “Tangents,” Brown holds the record for most Vimeo Staff Picks in the world thanks to his signature cuts and transitions—a widely-adopted approach he calls “a gesture more than a style.” His work has been featured in The New York Times, 60 Minutes, Ellen, The Atlantic, IndieWire, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and Variety, and was recently granted a 2018 Film Independent Spirit Award.
Living up to the namesake of his California hometown, Rough & Ready, Brown grew up poor and was homeless by the age of 12. But a strong vision coupled with a wild-west approach to 35mm photography and stop-motion filmmaking fueled his rise to creative freedom where he has cast a light on adversity, simplicity, and people—allowing vulnerability and reassurance to exist side by side.
We’ve teamed up with Matty to create a unique filmmaking challenge designed to push your skills and resourcefulness to the limit. And he’s written a short, single-scene, two-character script just for the occasion.
Download the script and use it to make a two-minute narrative film. You’ll need actors and a location, but most importantly you’ll need to tell the story in a unique and engaging way. The script is deliberately vague to be transferable across genres—horror, comedy, drama, etc. Get creative and put your own spin on it!
You must use a minimum of 10 exact lines from the script—any lines beyond that you can adapt and embellish to your liking. And remember, keep it all under two minutes. We’ve got over $10k in prizes for the winners. Ready… go!!
Behind-The-Scenes Prize: As you’re creating your Script To Screen submission, show us what you’re up to by posting BTS content to your Instagram account for a chance at winning the BTS prize. You can use Instagram posts, stories or IGTV, just remember to tag @collective_hq, @lacie_tech and #scripttoscreen.
