Epic Editing Challenge

July 28 to September 1, 2018

Are you an epic film editor?

Prove your skills by taking the Epic Editing Challenge. Cut a scene using the scripts and dailies from two film scenes for a chance to win awesome swag from a prize pool worth over $10,000.

Here’s how to submit your entry:

  1. Sign up for COLLECTIVE
  2. Download the provided scripts and dailies (available from July 28)
  3. Edit the footage into a final scene (you can choose to work on one or both scenes)
  4. Submit each edit as a contest entry (only submit one version of each scene)
  5. Promote your submission to earn public votes for a chance to win the Audience Award (note: Sven and Kris will review all eligible submissions and select one Grand Prize Winner and three Runners up. The public vote and Audience Award is separate from this).

Sven’s scene is taken from the independent drama The Ever After, which premiered at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival. The scene takes place in a hotel room and is technically very simple but will require creative editing to bring out the story. Yes, there is a script—but the dailies show a highly improvised scene, which gives you freedom to shape the arc!

Kris’s scene is a vignette taken from his short Timeless. The scene tells the story of a man reuniting with his car in an abandoned Sicilian factory. In his eyes, the car is as clean as the first time he drove it years ago. With this in mind, the challenge is to highlight those memories with the cuts and pacing. Anything can happen! You have the creative freedom to do something entirely different with the scene.

In selecting the Grand Prize and Runners-up Prize winners, the Resident Pros will be looking for submissions that excel at storytelling, technical execution, transitions, uniqueness and overall engagement.

In preparing for your submission, we encourage you to check out Kris and Sven's YouTube channels. In their most recent uploads, they discuss the contest and share tips on how to cut with story in mind as well as how to manage and organize footage for editing.

Rules

  • Entries must be submitted to COLLECTIVE before 23:59 PST on September 1, 2018.
  • Entrants are only eligible to win one prize regardless of their number of entries.
  • The Judges will review a maximum of one submission from each Entrant per scene (i.e. a maximum of two submissions per Entrant - one submission for each scene). If multiple submissions are submitted by an Entrant for a single scene then one submission will be selected at random for review, the others will be discarded.
  • Entrants have creative freedom to restructure scenes and remove or repeat actor’s lines.
  • Entrants can only use the footage provided. No reshoots or additional shots are allowed.
  • Entrants can use their own music provided they own the license or it falls under the free creative common license. In order to be eligible to win a prize, a license agreement will be requested to verify the right to use the music. Copyright violations disqualify entrant.
  • Entries longer than 5 minutes will be disqualified. We recommend 1-3 minutes runtime.
  • The judges will review eligible submissions and select Grand Prize and Runners-Up Prize Winners.
  • The Audience Award will be determined by the eligible submission with the highest number of COLLECTIVE votes (i.e., hearts) at 23:59 PST on September 1, 2018. If the film with the highest number of votes is also the film selected by the judges then the film with the second highest vote count (and so on) will win the Audience Award.
  • Please do not use your name as a credit in the scene. During judging review, each eligible submission will be anonymized so the judges will not know the name of the entrant.
  • Eligible Countries/Territories for this contest are United States, UK, France, Germany and Netherlands. We are working with our legal team to add more Countries for future contests.
